CarboEurope-IP presented at press event of the European Commission "Communicating European Research – What´s in it for you?", Brussels , 11-12 May 2004
CarboEurope was invited as a showcase of an important, successful research initiative to a high-level press event of the European Commission "Communicating European Research – What´s in it for you?" at Brussels, 11-12 May 2004, attended by 500 journalists, media consultants and project co-ordinators. Han Dolman, chairman of the former CarboEurope cluster, had the unique opportunity of two presentations. In a session opened by Commissioner Philippe Busquin, he presented the success and lessons learned in CarboEurope´s past communication with scientists, policy makers and the broad public. CarboEurope was also one of the two selected projects in the area of climate change in a second session about success of the new instruments. Han Dolman´s overview of the scientific challenge and the workplan of CarboEurope-IP raised significant journalistic interest. The discussion showed the broad concern about the vulnerability of the carbon sink in the biosphere to changes in climate and land use. There is also a clear need to understand and quantify better the present status of European croplands as a source of carbon. The discussion with journalists underlines the importance of a better understanding of ecosystem processes and their driving mechanisms. This is one of the main objectives of CarboEurope-IP. With the present level of support within the Sixth Framework Programme, however, it cannot be comprehensively addressed.
